How To Start

Peer Coaching Example:  How to question and follow-up

1.  Overview

I want to work on my questioning and follow-up skills.  My lesson is on the use of a factoring tree for prime numbers.

I would like you to observe my lesson with the students and listen for me using open-ended questions that encourage the students to answer questions that demonstrate their thinking skills.  The next thing that I want you to look for is my usage of wait time.  I want to make sure that I ask a question and not call on the first student who raises his/her hand.  Finally, I want you to look for my follow-up activity that will elicit responses from the students in order for me to check for a transfer of knowledge.

Things to observe

What did I observe

1.  Did I ask questions that made the students have to answer without a yes or no?

2.  How often did the teacher use wait-time before calling on students for answers?

3.  Did I use a follow-through activity at the end and did the students demonstrate a transfer of knowledge from the activity?

3.  Feedback.
